What is Sake?
Japan’s ancient national drink, sake (or more accurately, Nihonshu) is an alcoholic beverage made from rice and a few natural ingredients. Sometimes referred to as rice wine, sake is actually brewed more like beer, to around 15% ABV. The basic craft of how sake is made has remained unchanged for centuries, but small variations in production brings the wide variety of styles and grades of sake available today - including sparkling sake and fruit sake. There really is something for every taste.
The result of this natural, low-intervention brewing philosophy is a clean, delicious drink that’s free of sulphites and preservatives, as well as gluten-free and vegan-friendly. Being lower in acidity and tannins than wine, sake is also universally recognised as being a superior and versatile accompaniment for many foods, not just sushi!
